One reason some cancer patients put off going home is that they're worried they'll have to be always going back and forth over long distances for their therapy sessions. Although initial assessment and treatment may have to take place in a center outside your community, many treatments can be carried on in a local hospital or cancer care clinic. In some limited cases, the treatments may be offered in your own home or in your doctor's office. This is not as common a practice in Canada as it is in the United States, but this may change as we move more in the direction of home-based care. Some of the large centers offer out-of-town patients lodge accommodation while they receive treatment in ambulatory care clinics, and some provinces offer financial reimbursement for travel costs. Your local Cancer Society may also be able to help with arrangements; contact them to find out what assistance is available.
